The historic Elbe paddle steamer MS M.D. Pöppelmann is moored at Neustädter Hafen, on a branch of the Elbe, and welcomes passengers of all ages on board all year round. Centrally located, you have short distances to the old and new town and many options for a varied excursion program. An overnight stay in our ship hostel can be booked all year round and is possible for both individuals and groups of 15 people or more. Spread over three decks, we accommodate up to 106 guests from all over the world in 38 cabins. You spend the night in single to ten-bed cabins and let the charm of an overnight stay on a historic steamer carry you through the night.
Short distances lead to the showers and toilets, which are separated by gender and are available on all levels. Almost all cabins also have their own washbasin. In the captain’s cabin you can enjoy the comfort of a bathroom with bathtub.
There are many beautiful accommodations, but with us you are all in the same boat. The special charm of spending the night together on the water can help to strengthen team spirit and bring a new lightness to dusty everyday life. Our ship is centrally anchored so that you can reach a large number of impressive sights on foot and enhance your group trip with variety and well thought-out offers. The history of the MS Pöppelmann goes back to the 1960s, when the ship sailed along the Elbe under the name Karl Marx as part of the “White Fleet”. With space for over 1000 passengers and facilities such as a dance hall, sun deck, dining room and mocha bar, it was one of the most beautiful passenger ships ever built. After reunification, the fleet was replaced by more economical ships and the Pöppelmann was decommissioned. Only the hulls of today’s Pöppelmann and the former Friedrich Engels have survived and serve as floating hostels.

Die Geschichte unserer Pöppelmann ist eine bewegte und reicht bis in die 1960er Jahre zurück. Das Schiff wurde am 22.10.1963 in Roßlau erbaut und schipperte als Teil der „Weißen Flotte“ unter dem Namen Karl Marx die Elbe entlang. Als eine von vier identisch gefertigten Seitenrad-Luxus-Schiffen der DDR und wurde sie von zwei 270 PS starken Dieselmotoren und zwei Elektromotoren angetrieben. Auf ihren knapp 70 Meter Länge hatten damals über 1000 Passagiere Platz und reisten dank Tanzsalon, Sonnendecks, Speisesaal und Mokka-Bar ungemein luxuriös. Sie zählte wohl zu den schönsten Passagierschiffen, die jemals gebaut wurden und macht der Bezeichnung „Luxusmotorschiff“ alle Ehre.
Nach der Wende wurde die Flotte durch wirtschaftlichere Schiffe ersetzt und dieses prächtige „alte Mädchen“ außer Dienst gestellt. Nur noch die Schiffskörper der heutigen Pöppelmann und der ehemaligen Friedrich Engels sind erhalten und dienen fest vertäut zahlreichen Gästen als schwimmende Herberge.
1991 wurde die Karl-Marx nach dem deutschen Baumeister des Barock Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann umbenannt. In den Diensten von Kurfürst August dem Starken ist sein wohl berühmtestes Werk der Dresdner Zwinger. Die MS Pöppelmann wurde nun von der Qualifizierungs- und Ausbildungsförderungsgesellschaft Dresden GmbH übernommen und unter dem Namen „die Koje“ als Herberge eröffnet. Im Sommer 2012 wurde die Gesellschaft aufgelöst. Da die Landeshauptstadt Dresden vergeblich nach neuen Investoren suchte stand das Schiff kurz vor der Verschrottung. Verhindert wurde vom Ehepaar Sapsaj, als dieses auf den Dampfer aufmerksam wurde. Kurzerhand kaufte das Ehepaar das Schiff und eröffnete es im Oktober 2013 unter dem heutigen Namen Schiffsherberge Pöppelmann.

As one of four identically manufactured side-wheel luxury ships in the GDR, it was powered by two 270 hp diesel engines and two electric motors.
